Chapters 1 - 5 [after typing so much i think i'm doing this assignment wrong]
THe story takes place in London in the year AF 632. It is a hierarchical world where everyone's lives are predetermined by the COntroller on each continent. With amazing advancements in science, the mental and physical ablilities of people can be made according to specifications. Alphas and Betas are superior in intelligence and Gammas, Deltas and Epsilons are inferior and are used for grunt labor. As the newborns go through life, they are constantly conditioned to hate nature and books (in order for the citizen to never think critically or enjoy beauty). As they sleep a voice box is played where they undergo hypnopaedia (sleep teaching) to control how they think. Children play rudimentary sexual games and the lives of these people in the future often seem to have sexual intercourse/playing often. Students in this society find it unbelieveable when they learn that "erotic play between children had been regarded as abnormal, immoral and had been rigorously surpressed." Even though books are banned and history is not taught, the Controller in the story has a collection of old forbidden books.
Lenina Crowne is a female who is critized by a friend for not having different people because in this society "everyone belongs to everyone". Longterm relationships and passions is considered unhealthy and the idea of families and parents have seem to have long passed and people live as a collective. She has decided to go with Bernard an Alpha Plus to a savage reservation. Bernard is known to be to be "ugly", a loner, and doesnt enjoy things everybody else does. He's different than everyone else and despises how the way the world thinks and he feels emotionally apart from the rest of society. He is friends with Helmholtz Watson who is also different from the others.
On Ford's Day everybody gathers together and they play music and take Soma, a drug that creates happiness and replaces religion and alcohol. As Bernard's group of people gather
to "become one" they claim to hear the footsteps of their Ford but Bernard doesnt hear it and feels even further apart from the rest of society, realizing how different he is.
i believe that the author is trying to stress the fact that there are people who are able to have COMPLETE control of every aspect of our lives and its only up to us to take a stand and defend our privacy and rights. (okay.. maybe not our rights, but w/e) it is quite unfair how everyone's lives are predetermined and what they'll end up doing for the rest of their lives. its quite sad...

Dude, this is not my post but only a comment on your comment on mine. Lol. Okay, I can totally understand why it would be Man vs. Repressed) Emotions. So really its Man vs. Man right? Because even though its not like literally Man vs. Man, its scientist (leader(s) or director) making these people repress their emotions? I don't know. Lol. This book is still a little confusing!
OH WILSON! Alright what you think!
Bernard, you said it is written in his point of view also. Okay from your entry this is what I gain out of it.
My post! YAY!
Okay, Bernard, a man you said who is different. I personally feel that he has a lot of internal conflict. He feels isolated and lonely because he is different. This plot would not be a good plot if there wasn't one who has a flaw. & definely, Bernard is the flaw. From what I got out of your post, Throughout the book, Bernard is constantly trying to figure out where he belongs and why he is not able to be like the rest. Maybe the author is trying to tell us something, a message, Bernard, which I feel symbolizes the unique-ness we all have, and being all the same is just way too boring. Just maybe? Lol. You get what I'm saying?
